Learning something should bring about transformation in a person. That is the real goal of value education. Cramming more and more stuff into a child’s brain, without analysing its real-life-impact, is just a vanity exercise.

Information is not transformation:

There are two types of content that are readily available for a child to access:

Informational content: It is that content that provides knowledge about a subject. Books, online articles, and videos are some examples.
Entertainment content: This evokes different emotions in the consumer. It makes them laugh or cry. The goal is to keep them emotionally engaged to the content presented. Movies, stories and talk shows are some examples.

Then, there is a third type of content that you could rarely find in public domain.

This content has the power to change the way a child thinks and acts. It alters their attitudes and behaviours. This type of content is called transformational content.

It not only informs and entertains, but also transforms.

Now let us see the five steps to create transformational content.

Step 1: Lets call it the Pros. At the first step, introduce the value to the students so that they could understand its real meaning. Provide examples and benefits. Stories are one of the best ways to carry out this step.

Step 2: Let’s call it the Cons. Every value will have to be acquired at a cost. Sacrifices should be made. For example, hard work comes at a cost. It costs your laziness. Especially if you are someone who loves sleeping 12 hours a day. Knowing these will keep the child reality-ready on what to expect once they make that value a part of their life.

Step 3: Lets call this step Play. Kids should play around with the value they want to acquire. They should engage in activities, role-plays, and scenarios with that value at their center. This step yields better results if it’s made engaging and gamified.

Step 4: This step is called Affirm. According to analytical psychology, most of our behaviours stems from the unconscious. To change deep learned patters in the unconscious, you must speak its language. The language of positive affirmations.  The use of vivid imagery, transformational symbols, breathing techniques and verbal prompts can provide a magical effect in bringing about lasting changes in a child’s value system.

Step 5: The final step is Visualize. Creative visualization is asking the child to actively imagine a guided journey in their mind. This helps them internalize the value and make it a permanent part of them. Making this process multi-sensory will give better results.

Lets sum up. All the above steps are important and should be followed in the order of sequence for giving best results. There is a science behind its structure. When a child follows this process for a significant stretch of time like 48 to 90 days, it would make a permanent mark in their behaviour. It will help them acquire that value and make it their friend for a lifetime.
